The Secret Police
The Secret Police is the Worlds longest running and most respected Police tribute band. In early 1996, guitarist Michael Findlay and his brother, drummer Cameron, were touring in a band called Bold as Love playing all the great music of Jimi Hendrix. The band was fairly busy but not as busy as Mike & Cam wanted to be – the question was ‘How do we get more work’? After consulting some of the booking agents they were using it emerged that there was a growing demand for a quality tribute to The Police. There was no band meeting this demand so there was lots of work to be had. Mike & Cam had always loved the music of The Police – seeing them during their tours in 1978/79 – and decided it would be great to start a new band covering the material. They needed someone who could play bass and sing like Sting. After failing to find anyone in their local Gloucestershire area, they placed an ad ‘desperately seeking Sting’ in a newspaper to widen their search. The ad was seen by another Gloucestershire musician who knew someone who could fulfil the role. John Green was playing bass in an Oxfordshire band at the time but like Mike & Cam was looking for bigger, better gigs – also like Mike & Cam John loved the music of The Police. Numbers were exchanged, Mike and John spoke on the phone and an audition was set-up.The audition happened in the private back room of a pub in Stroud, Gloucestershire in early June 1996. Mike, Cam & John agreed to individually learn three Police tracks – Roxanne, So Lonely and Message in a Bottle – and then meet up to see what it sounded like playing together. It worked, the songs sounded great and there was an instant chemistry between the three men. The band rehearsed for the rest of June and July and after two warm up gigs in local pubs booked their first show for August 3rd 1996. This took place at the famous Grand Theatre in Clapham, London – on the stage where Charlie Chaplin performed in 1900. The house was packed with 1800 people for an 80’s theme night and their reaction to The Secret Police was fantastic. Since that debut the band has appeared at hundreds of venues throughout the UK, across Europe and the Middle East. They have played at universities and music festivals and been booked for private parties, birthdays, weddings and corporate events. The band plays all the greatest hits of The Police like no other – with incredible power and intensity. Performing to festival audiences of thousands or to crowds at smaller more intimate venues, the band has a set of glowing testimonials from all over the World. The authenticity of the sound is beyond question and the performance goes way beyond just sounding like The Police. This is a top quality, professional band made up of three classy musicians and performers. The band has passed close scrutiny by Outlandos – the official Sting and The Police Fan Club. In April 2003, Police and Sting fans were in London from all over the World to see Sting appearing at The Royal Albert Hall. The Fan Club arranged a special show by The Secret Police for fan club members at Dingwalls, the famous Camden Town venue where The Police played in 1977. This most critical audience agreed that the gig was as close as it gets to the real thing. Praise indeed – from the very people best placed to judge just how good The Secret Police are. Since then, many Police fans come to see the band because of the reputation that has been passed on between fan club members. When in 2007 Sting, Andy Summers & Stewart Copeland announced they would be reuniting for one last farewell The Police again became front page news. The global tour that followed has helped to remind people of the uniqueappeal of The Police’s fusion of Rock, Punk and Reggae and in turn increased demand for the UK’s finest tribute. But it is not only lifelong Police fanatics who will enjoy this band. The set will appeal to live music fans anywhere. Distilled down to its simplest form this is about a good rock band, playing great songs, which many will know and love. Just about everyone has a favourite Police track and The Secret Police have impressed music fans everywhere with their performances.

A four-piece young band who put a modern swing beat to both old classics and modern up to date songs but always with their own twist. An example of some classics are Ain’t nobody and dancing in the moonlight and modern songs that are well received are Sorry and Seven Nation Army, these are just a few but there are always many surprises to their set of songs at every gig. Now let’s describe the band; Charlie-Anne is on lead vocals and plays acoustic guitar, with a voice that is quirky and very recognisable as hers. Jason Keen is the drummer, a strong character that has played drums for many years. The lead guitarist is Leo Phipps who is a great guitarist that is always learning new songs and willing to jump in and play all the many different styles and rhythms that are asked for. Then we have Jacob Smith, a typical bass player cool and laid back but very talented. The band are very popular in and around Wiltshire because they do have a great unique sound, playing pubs, clubs and festivals they have had great reviews and publicity.

The band has evolved over a number of years with the current line-up coming together in early 2017. Bob Shaw (Guitar, Mandolin and Vocal) and Phil Heasman (Box drum and Bowler hat) from the original line-up were joined by Joe Rendall (Guitar and Vocals) and Mike Rendall (Bass).
